Four kilometers of steel suspended over the gray-green waters of the Akashi Strait: the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge is measured not just in numbers, but in that physical sense of vertigo that strikes when you stop to look at it from the shore of Kobe and truly understand how big it is. Inaugurated in 1998 after nearly ten years of construction, it connects the city of Kobe on the island of Honshū to Awaji Island, and with its 3,911 meters of total length, it holds the record for the longest suspension bridge in the world. The central span measures 1,991 meters alone, a record that still stands today.
What strikes you the most as you approach is the scale of the towers: standing 298 meters above sea level, they rise from the water like two pillars of an industrial cathedral. The bridge was designed to withstand earthquakes of up to magnitude 8.5 and winds exceeding 80 meters per second — a concrete necessity in a region that in 1995 experienced the devastating Hanshin earthquake, which occurred right during the construction phase. That event literally shifted the pylons by almost a meter, forcing engineers to recalibrate the entire project.
Inside the tower: the observatory on the bridge
Few know that it is possible to physically enter one of the towers of the bridge. The Bridge World program, managed by the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway company, allows visitors to ascend to the top of the tower via elevators and internal walkways, reaching a panoramic platform nearly 300 meters high. From up there, you can see the traffic flowing on the roadway below, the water of the strait crossed by cargo ships, and on clear days, even the silhouette of Osaka in the distance.
The tour also includes the opportunity to walk on an external walkway that runs along the structure of the bridge, with the wind felt strongly and the dull noise of cars passing through the metal beams. It is not an experience for those who suffer from vertigo, but for those who endure, it is hard to find a comparable observation point throughout Japan. Tickets for the Bridge World cost about 3,000 yen per person, and reservations — mandatory — must be made online in advance, as spots are limited.
How to get there and when to visit
The main access point for visitors is located at Maiko Park, in the Tarumi district of Kobe, easily reachable by train from Sannomiya station in about 30 minutes by taking the San'yo line. From Maiko Park, you can access the Maiko Marine Promenade, a pedestrian walkway that extends 317 meters beneath the roadway of the bridge, with a partially transparent floor that allows you to see the water 47 meters below. The ticket for this walkway is separate and cheaper than the Bridge World.
The best time to visit is in the early morning, before school groups and organized tours arrive. In spring, between March and April, the surrounding park is dotted with cherry blossoms that create a striking visual contrast with the metal structures of the bridge. In autumn, the red leaves of the momiji do the same. Avoid the weekends in August, when the crowds are significant and the temperatures make any outdoor activity unpleasant.
The Bridge Museum: Maiko PA
Inside the Maiko service area, which is also accessible on foot, there is a small museum dedicated to the construction of the bridge that is worth a visit even for those who are not particularly passionate about engineering. It displays scale models, samples of the original steel cables — made up of thousands of thin wires bundled together — and a video reconstruction of the construction phases. It clearly shows how the pillars were founded on the bottom of the strait, in deep waters and with strong currents, using pneumatic caissons of unprecedented size.
A detail worth physically seeking out: at the entrance of the museum, there is a cross-section of one of the bridge's main cables on display. Each cable is made up of 36,830 steel wires each with a diameter of 5.23 millimeters. Seen up close, these cables almost appear organic, like intertwined tree trunks, and better convey than any number the amount of human and material work that keeps this bridge suspended every day.
Practical tips for organizing the visit
The Bridge World is only available during certain times of the year and requires advance booking on the official website of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway: it is advisable to check the available dates before planning the trip. The Maiko Marine Promenade, on the other hand, is open all year round, with hours that vary seasonally but generally accessible from 9 AM to 6 PM. Bring an extra layer even in summer: the wind on the strait surprisingly lowers the perceived temperature. Allow at least two hours to calmly visit the park, the promenade, and the museum.
