About Odeonsplatz

Odeonsplatz - München | Secret World Trip Planner

Odeonsplatz is a square in the center of Munich, a place where the most important cultural events in Germany take place, including popular outdoor concerts Klassik on Odeonsplatz. Twice a year a handicraft festival is held at Odeonsplatz. Around the square there are historic royal residences, including Hofgarten, Feldherrnhalle, and Theatinerkirche.

Particularly noteworthy is the neoclassical Feldherrnhalle building. In the hall there are bronze statues of Count Tilly and Prince Wrede, as well as the Bavarian Monument. The impressive external facade of Theatinerkirche, built in the late 17th century in the style of Italian late Baroque, has two large towers and powerful domes. The interior impresses with richly decorated stucco and Corinthian columns.

The name of the square comes from Odeon, a large concert hall that was built in 1826-1828 by Leo von Klenze, a famous German architect. The hall was severely damaged by air raids in 1944; after the war it was transformed into the seat of the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior.
